Remembering Those Who Have
Fallen in the Nation's Service

War is Hell. It always has been and always will be.
Regardless of political justifications and/or criti-
cisms, we remember those who have fallen in the Hell
of war. Throughout history, soldiers have found ways
to cope with the horrors. Jaeson Parsons, veteran of
the Iraqi War tells the story of collcting images of art in Iraq.

Is College Right for Everyone
20 May 2011

Is a Bachelor's Degree always the ticket to success
and realization of the American Dream? We Boomers
grew up hearing the mantra, "Earn that degree, and write
your own ticket for a good job." Of course, as many of
us got those degrees, the American economy underwent
significant changes, with an over abundance of college-
educated workers. I remember well how many friends
graduated in the early seventies and ended up having
to take jobs completely out of their fields, most of
them not even requiring a degree.

Today's grads are facing an even tougher challenge as
college cost soar, jobs are scarce and competition is
tough. Will today's grads be a class of indentured wor-
kers, working to pay off hundreds of thousands of dollars
in college loans? Has the time come to consider alternative
post high school education? We Boomers were strongly dis-
couraged from pursuing technical training over the degree route.
In my humble opinion, this was a serious mistake; the time has
come to reassess educational future goals.

Twelve Steps Toward
Political Perspective
10 May 2011

Best selling writer, Walter Mosley was recently inter-
viewed on MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' Show about his latest
book, '12 Steps Toward Political Revelation'.
If not revealing, this interview is very thought pro-
voking. Are we addicted to 'Americanism'? Are we
too trusting of experts, failing to rely on our own
intelligence? Take a few minutes to watch this
fascinating and fun clip. '12 Steps Toward Political
Revelation'
is definitely on my To Read List.

Conspiracy Theories
16 May 2011

Throughout world history, comspiracy theories have
flourished. Many have been the same stories re-
cycled to blame different groups. But in the de-
cade since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the number of
those who believe in such theories has blossomed.
Jonathan Kay managing editor, columnist, and blogger
at Canada's "National Post" newspaper gives an in-
sightful interview on the subject. Listen below and
take a look inside of Kay's recent book,
Among the Truthers: A Journey Through America's
Growing Conspiracist Underground

Understanding the Financial Meltdown
How Some Made Millions Betting Against The Market
3 May 2011

Have you ever understood what happened in the 2008
Financial Meltdown? Do you know what a collateralized debt obligation (CDO)
is? Jesse Eisinger and his colleague Jake Bernstein recently received the 2011
Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for a series of stories about the banks and
hedge funds engaged in questionable financial practices. This is the best expla-
nation that I've heard of this complicated and sad business. Follow links below to
listen to interview with Eisinger and Bernstein, read the not-so-short synopsis. There
are links on the site to the series of articles at ProPublica. I'd really like to think that
the better we understand the issue, the smarter we'll be in the future about preventing
such irresponsible and damaging financial policy.

What Amazing Times!
2 May 2011

We are living in truly amazing times. Less than a week
after the royal wedding of Prince William, possible heir to the English
throne and Kate Middleton, of no aristocratic or titled connections, the
United States has succeeded in capturing and killing Osama Bin Laden,
master mind of the 9/11 attacks. Makes me wonder, have we seen a cou-
ple of 'Glorious Revolutions'? One of middle class background has been
given the second higest royal title, Duchess. And the Americans have put
aside the vicious fighting between parties as President Obama has accom-
plished President Bush's goal of eliminating Bin Laden.

Senator Bernie Sanders: "The Speech"
31 March 2011

The economy, the federal budget, and the growing national deficit
are key issues defining politics in Washington today. In December,
President Obama signed into law an extension of tax cuts
-- including cuts for the very wealthiest Americans. One Independent
senator delivered an eight-hour speech on the Senate floor
decrying the tax deal and what he believed it symbolized:
corporate greed and the collapse of the middle class.
U. S Senator Bernie Sanders talks about his appeal for
a fundamental change in national priorities.

Nothing New Under the Sun
18 March 2011
What a world! It seems like every time you turn on the news, a new uprising or disaster has occured. Wolrlwide food and energy resources are getting more expensive, jobs are in short supply - will it ever end? Not likely. Suddenly I'm realizing that I'm old enough to understand that there really is nothing new under the sun. All the recent news continually reminds me of past events - protests against the VietNam War in the 60's & 70's, the ecology movement of the 70's (now called Going Green), oil prices going through the roof during the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo. Of course in this age of High Tech, communications are so much faster, people connect and organize instantly and act so quickly, it's even more difficult to know let alone keep up with what's going on.

On a grand scale, the current astrological picture, position of the planets in the 12 zodiac signs, reflects current events. In general the planets are moving to the end of the Zodiac, soon the start again in Aries, the first of the 12 signs. Restless, freedom-loving Jupiter and unconventional, progressive, unpredictable Uranus have both recently moved into egotistical, impulsive Aries. If the Stars are any indication, the near future is likely to be an exciting time.

On a more entertaining note, all-time Boomer favorites, Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond, and Dr John have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Yep, the Beat goes on...

Keep Smiling,
Paula
